1994 Miata E Production / D Prepared Race Car Build

In mid-2019 I purchased a stripped down 1994 Miata 1.8L NA “Black Edition” with 214,000 miles on it. The car had been partially disassembled by the prior owner who planned to rebuild it into a fast street car but abandoned the project after he realized how much work it was. The chassis was straight, with no major accident damage, just a few dents and a small impact on the left rear that had been repaired properly. The interior was ratty, the soft top was off and the car had been sitting under a tarp in Northern California for a few years. All the parts were there as far as I could see. It looked like the perfect start to a full race car build. So I plopped down $850, got the title and drove off with the car on a U-Haul trailer.

This Miata race car build is intended to be a dual-purpose competition machine. I’m building it to meet both SCCA’s E Production road racing and SCCA D Prepared class autocross rules. I also plan to run time attack and the occasional track day in the car. Maybe even some vintage races with VARA. My goal is to build a fun, safe and very fast car to compete in for many years.

Once I got the car settled into my garage, I started disassembling it and selling off unneeded parts. That’s about the point where I began my build posts. I walk through the build plan, the parts I need to buy, and the ups and downs stripping down and building up a road racing Miata step-by-step from scratch.

With work and family commitments this has turned into a long term project. I’ll do my best to post regularly, but life gets in the way. I hope you enjoy these posts and get a lot of value for your own Miata build. Read on…
